Short vs long sleep stories: choosing a listening length
A runtime tells you how much recording there is. It does not tell you when you are supposed to fall asleep.

Picture your evening / Illustrative sceneChoose length by how you want playback to behave: a short complete recording, a longer world to stay with, or a story controlled by a timer. There is no deadline to fall asleep.
Sources & review notes ↗Runtime and sleep time are different measures
A 15-minute recording contains about 15 minutes of audio. It does not establish that you will fall asleep within that time. A longer story is not evidence that a listener needs longer, either.
Treat duration as a practical feature. Do you want to hear a whole short piece? Would you rather have a longer recording available? Do you want the player to stop after an interval you choose? Those questions have useful answers without turning the evening into a performance.
Look at actual examples
Headspace describes sleepcasts lasting 45–55 minutes. Lalai’s story pages list runtimes from 55 to 63 minutes. Insight Timer’s story collection shows a variety of individual durations rather than a single length for every track.↗↗↗
These examples describe published recordings and formats, not the ideal length of a sleep story. Check the specific track you are considering; a catalog can include very different pieces under a shared category.

A shorter recording can feel complete
You may prefer a recording that finishes without needing a timer. Before choosing, notice whether its ending is one you want to hear and whether the player moves to another item afterward. Playback behavior matters as much as the number beside the title.
For a longer story, think about replaying or returning to it. If you enjoy a familiar opening, length may be less important than voice and setting. The replay and variation guide explores that preference.

Use the timer as a control
A timer gives you another option: choose a story you like and set the desired stopping behavior where the app supports it. Read the timer guide to distinguish a timed stop from an end-of-story setting.
For Lalai, start with the world that appeals and then look at its published runtime. Night Train is listed at 57 minutes, while Houseboat is 63. Neither number is a promise about your sleep. The app is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and its illustrated collection is available to browse here.
