Sleep timer vs all-night audio: what each setting does
A timer answers when playback should stop. The right setting begins with the behavior you want from your device.

Picture your evening / Illustrative sceneA timed stop, an end-of-story stop, and extended playback are different controls. Choose the behavior you want, then test how the particular app implements it.
Sources & review notes ↗A story ending is not always everything ending
A narrated recording can finish while a background sound continues. Slumber’s guide, for example, describes controls for background sounds after a story. Read those details if you want the whole experience to stop together.↗
The label “sleep timer” does not specify every behavior. It might affect a particular player, a sound layer, or the whole session. Check the app you are using rather than assuming its controls match another one.
After a duration
Playback ends after a selected amount of time. Check whether the app fades or stops immediately.
At the end
The story reaches its ending. Check separately whether background sounds continue.
Extended playback
Audio continues under the selected mode. Device settings and the app’s behavior still matter.

What Lalai documents
Lalai’s support guide lists end-of-story and 15-, 30-, or 45-minute choices for stories. For mixes, it lists timed options including one hour and eight hours, plus all-night playback. It describes a gradual fade when the timer ends.↗
Those are playback settings, not recommendations about how long you should listen. “All night” is also not a promise that a device can never interrupt playback. Test the mode, output device, and phone settings you plan to use.

A useful rehearsal
While you are awake, try a short timer and watch what happens when it ends. Does the narration stop? Does the ambience remain? Does the volume fade? It is easier to adjust a setting after seeing its behavior once.
If you switch between speakers, headphones, or another output, check the setup again. Keep the volume comfortable and read the site’s listening guidance rather than using a timer as a substitute for volume control.
Keep duration separate from a deadline
A 30-minute setting means playback is scheduled to stop after that interval. It does not mean you are supposed to be asleep by then. Likewise, a long story is not a test you need to finish.
Our guide to story length explains the difference between a recording’s runtime and your own listening preferences. Choose the control that makes the device behave the way you want, without turning it into a score for the evening.
