A little rain.
A little room.
Build a small soundscape with four playable layers. Start with one sound, add a second, and leave some space between them.

Pick the sound
you want to notice.
A mix does not need many layers to have character. Start with the sound you would choose on its own: rain at a window, a river or a fire. Let that be the foreground.
Then introduce one other texture at a lower relative level. Rain and fire suggest shelter. A river and night insects suggest an outdoor place. These are creative starting points, not prescribed settings for sleep.
The interactive demonstration on this page has four short sound samples. In the Lalai app, the mixer supports up to five sound layers and a separate music channel. The browser demo is a smaller way to try the idea.
Set your device volume low before listening, then adjust to a comfortable level. The percentages below describe the balance inside this mix, not a safe or medically recommended volume.
Four sounds.
Entirely your balance.
Start with a preset or move the sliders yourself. These are short Lalai sound samples, played on a loop here. Nothing starts until you press play.

Sliders set the relative balance, not a recommended listening volume. Start with your device volume low. Listening safely.

Set the scene by ear.
Try a little rain. Add a little night air.

Stay for
the first few words.
Tea House in the Rain. 58 minutes in full. Part of the paid app collection. This player contains only the opening sample.
Get the app for all 58 minutes, explore this story or open the sample audio.
Foreground. Background. Space.
Choose an anchor
Start with just rain or just river. Notice the character before adding anything else.
Add something smaller
Bring in fire or night ambience until it feels like part of the same imagined place.
Remove a layer
If the mix feels crowded, lower or remove something. More sounds do not necessarily make a more appealing scene.

Keep a combination
you want to revisit.
Lalai’s app includes saved mixes and a sleep timer in its free offering.↗ Those features serve different purposes: one remembers a combination, while the other controls when listening ends.
This browser demonstration does not save a mix. Its presets are starting values for these four samples, and playback repeats until you pause it or leave the page. No account or subscription is required to experiment here.
The app, on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, has 198 sounds to mix. If the mixer feels like your way into Lalai, explore the sounds on the homepage and try the music listening room as well. A voice is optional; a small scene made from sound can be an experience of its own.
For a narrated rainy room, read the tea house and glasshouse guide.
