How to check a sleep app before paying: a five-minute listening test

A small checklist for the things a store description cannot decide for you: the voice, the controls, and the offer you are accepting.

The short answer

Pick one recording, inspect the controls you would use, and read the exact purchase terms. Five minutes is a suggested first pass—not a complete product test.

Minute one: choose something real

Do not begin by deciding whether an entire app is “good.” Find one thing you would actually play. It might be a particular story, rain sound, or meditation. If you cannot find anything that interests you, a long feature list will not make that decision for you.

For Lalai, the app is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and the Night Train is free in full, so you can run the whole test before paying for anything.

Minutes two and three: listen and inspect

Use an available sample to notice the voice, pauses, texture, and changes in volume. You are checking whether you enjoy the recording. You do not need to prove that it will affect your sleep in a particular way.

Then inspect the controls you expect to use. Can you find the timer? How do you replay a favorite? If offline listening matters, a quick first pass is not enough: complete the download and test it separately before relying on it.

Minute four: understand the offer

Separate content that is free without a trial from content temporarily unlocked by a trial. Check the actual billing period and renewal amount. Calm’s billing guide is one example of why an annual purchase and its monthly equivalent should not be confused.↗

Also check what you are buying. Spotify explains that a paid podcast subscription is separate from Premium.↗ A payment to a platform does not automatically unlock every creator or app associated with it.

Minute five: write down your preference

A useful note is specific: “I liked the voice, but I still need to test downloads.” Another is “I only want the free rain sound.” Those observations are more helpful than awarding a product an arbitrary star score after a short browse.

Use the checklist below for your first pass. Leave anything you have not checked incomplete, and return to it before paying. For Lalai’s documented offering, the free-content guide and offline guide explain the details.
