A sleep app for travel: an airplane-mode checklist

Prepare the recording you want before you need it. Seeing a title in your library is not the same as having its audio available offline.

The short answer

Finish the required downloads, then test the exact recording without a network connection. A saved title or briefly played stream is not enough evidence that everything is ready.

Prepare a recording, not just an app

An app can open offline while the recording you want remains unavailable. Begin by choosing the exact story or sound mix for the trip, then follow the product’s download instructions. If you change the choice later, repeat the check.

Slumber documents offline episode downloads. Lalai’s support guide also describes offline listening, with downloads that build as you listen. The mechanics are not necessarily identical.↗↗

Let the files finish

In Lalai, streaming begins while files are being saved in the background. A story can involve more than one audio file, so hearing its opening online does not establish that the entire experience has finished downloading.

Give the process time on a reliable connection. Read the full offline guide if you need the details. Clearing downloaded content, reinstalling, or storage cleanup can change what is available later; an old successful test is not a permanent guarantee.

Rehearse the setup you will use

Turn off network access, then start the selected recording. Airplane mode can coexist with Wi-Fi on some devices, so make sure the test is actually offline. Check the timer and the headphones or speaker you intend to use as well.

Do this while you have time to fix a problem. If playback fails, reconnect and investigate the download rather than discovering the issue on the journey. Keep a familiar alternative available if listening is important to your travel routine.

Choose the atmosphere separately

Once the practical checks are done, choose a setting you want to return to. A train story can fit a journey; a sheltered room can offer a different atmosphere. You do not have to match the fictional setting to your destination.

Lalai’s app is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad; this guide describes its documented approach alongside a general travel checklist. Browse The Night Train Through the Snow for a journey setting, or use the same preparation steps with the app you already have.
