Follow a plot.
Or linger in a place.
The useful distinction is what you want from the listening—not a claim that one format is better for everyone.

Picture your evening / Illustrative scene
What do you want
to follow tonight?
An audiobook can be something you actively want to finish: a mystery, a memoir, a subject you are learning. A bedtime story can offer a different kind of attention, with a setting and a voice you are happy to spend time with.
Those are preferences, not fixed rules. Some audiobooks are quiet and descriptive. Some listeners enjoy a familiar novel at bedtime. A label alone cannot tell you whether the material suits you.
Lalai’s approach is specific: unhurried stories built around ordinary activities in painted places. A conductor makes a round, a gardener tends plants, a tea house closes for the evening.↗
The question is whether you want to keep track of what happens next, or whether you would rather hear the details of a place. Neither preference needs a score.

A few things
a sample can reveal.
Listen for the voice first: its tone, articulation and pace. Then notice the material. Do you want to follow the subject closely? Is the setting appealing? Would background sound add something for you?
A short sample cannot tell you everything. It may not include later music, changes of pace or an ending. Use the description and runtime alongside the excerpt, especially if you have specific preferences about what you hear.
The Night Train player below is an opening sample, not a full audiobook or a complete free web story. The full 57-minute Lalai story is free in the app, on the App Store for iPhone and iPad.
If you like the approach, choose a first story by setting rather than looking for a universal “best” title.
