Sources & review notes ↗Medito: all of it, free
Medito is run by a non-profit foundation, which says every meditation in the app is free, for good. The app includes sleep stories, sounds and meditations, and the foundation says it needs no account, shows no ads and has no premium tier.↗
That makes it the nearest thing to a Calm that never asks for money. Start there if you want guided meditation and sleep stories without ever meeting a paywall.
Free, all of it
Everything at no cost and no paid tier to upgrade to: Medito, and Smiling Mind for individuals and families.

Insight Timer: a very large free library
Insight Timer describes itself as the largest free library in the world, with no ads, and its stories section lets you browse free tracks from many different teachers and narrators.↗↗
There is an optional paid membership on top of the free library. Our Lalai and Insight Timer comparison looks at the difference between a broad library and a small, focused one.

Smiling Mind: free from a not-for-profit
Smiling Mind is a not-for-profit organisation, and says its app has been free for individuals and families for more than 12 years. It is built around mindfulness and wellbeing, with sleep among the things it covers.↗
Already on your iPhone
If you only want a steady sound, you may not need an app at all. Apple’s Background Sounds plays ambient sound on supported iPhones and iPads without anything to install.↗ Our guide to Background Sounds covers when it is enough.
You can also play ours free in your browser: rain, the sea at night, an open fire and four colours of noise, each with a sleep timer.
Calm and Lalai, on their free tiers
Calm is free to download and says some of its programs and features stay free, while other content needs its paid subscription.↗ Our guide to what is free in Calm explains the difference between free content and a free trial.
Lalai is not free in full either, but its free tier is not a trial: The Night Train Through the Snow, all 57 minutes of it, a free sound in every category, free music, the mixer and the sleep timer, with no account.↗ Everything else is $24 a year or $3 a month.
